How To Transition Your Dog To A Raw Diet
When it comes to making the switch to raw,
there are a few easy rules to follow for a smooth transition.
Most dogs do best with a cold turkey (pun intended!) switch.
Because Soul’y Raw blends are made up of only whole food ingredients-fresh meat, organs, bones, & fish- there is no need to slowly transition. Real, raw food is what their body is designed to be fueled by!
That being said, some pets with sensitive stomachs or pre-existing digestive issues may need a slower transition. If you're unsure, please consult your vet prior to making the change.
Always keep in mind-You know your pet best.
Stick with one protein to start.
It may be tempting to order a whole variety of new proteins for your new raw fed dog or cat and, I promise, we’ll get there. But to start, we do suggest sticking with only one of our lighter, easier to digest proteins- generally chicken or turkey. Try this one protein for 2-3 weeks and, as long as your pet does well, then select a new protein for the next 2-3 week period. Continue in this style and take note- what proteins does your pet love? Which weren’t their favorite? This process will make it easier to pinpoint which proteins will become fast favorites and also narrow down if you pet may have any allergies or aversions as well.
Please, please, please do not mix raw with dry food!
The digestive system of all mammals run off stomach acids and the PH balance of those acids changes based upon what needs to be digested. Raw meat requires a completely different PH level compared to carb heavy, highly processed, cooked kibble. so, in mixing the two, the process of digestion is made much less efficient and can lead to tummy troubles.
Know how much you are feeding
Because your pet will be eating fresh, whole food sources of the nutrition they need, if your pet was previously eating a dry or canned food, they will not need to eat the same volume of food. We’ve made this easy to read chart to help estimate how much to feed each day but, again, you are the best judge of your pet’s health. If your pet is young, active, and/or working they will need more to eat. If they’re less active or getting to be a bit… plump - then decrease their total daily feeding amount.
We strongly suggest purchasing a food scale to measure exactly how much you are feeding. (Digital food scales generally range in price from $10-$20 and there are dozens of options on Amazon.)
How Much To Feed
A RAW FOOD DIET ALLOWS FOR INCREASED DIGESTIBILITY AND BIOAVAILABILITY OF THE INGREDIENTS AND NUTRIENTS. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FEED YOUR PET LESS FOOD DAILY AS COMPARED TO A COMMERCIAL PET FOOD DIET.
THE BEST FORMULA FOR CALCULATING DAILY SERVINGS OF FOOD IS TO BASE FOOD VOLUME OFF OF YOUR PETS’ BODY WEIGHT. WE RECOMMEND SERVING 2 -3 % OF YOUR PET’S BODY WEIGHT (IN OUNCES OF FOOD), SPLIT INTO TWO DAILY MEALS—MORNING AND EVENING. PUPPIES AND KITTENS SHOULD BE FED TWICE THE AMOUNT OF FOOD AS COMPARED TO AN ADULT DOG OR CAT. THE DAILY FOOD INTAKE LEVEL SHOULD BE MEASURED IN OUNCES TO ENSURE THE MOST PRECISE METHOD OF FEEDING RAW FOOD.
